Submission to WorkSafeBC’s consultation on proposed amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation

Doctors of BC recently provided feedback on WorkSafeBC’s proposed amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. We support all efforts to improve safety in the workplace so long as such efforts are implemented in an effective manner that reduces workplace violence and harassment while also avoids adding to already existing physician burdens.

Gender Equity in the Medical Profession

Doctors of BC recognizes that gender inequity is a societal issue that affects female physicians negatively in areas like income, career advancement, mental health, and job satisfaction. We commit to taking action on this issue by tracking gender representation in the association, supporting efforts to address the gender pay gap, applying GBA+ in decision-making, reviewing parental leave benefits, and helping members access resources mentorship and leadership opportunities.

Developing Risk Assessments for Violence Prevention Training

Doctors of BC Position: Doctors of BC work with the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in BC and others appropriate agencies to develop risk assessments particular to health care workplaces, and programs to build capacity in violence prevention training suitable to a wide variety of health care settings.

Promoting Violence Prevention for Healthcare Workers

Doctors of BC Position: Doctors of BC liaises with regulatory agencies such as the Workers’ Compensation Board of BC and the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in BC to promote violence prevention and appropriate management of aggressive behaviour for all health care workers in BC.
