What you need to know
Starting a business can be a daunting prospect, but Doctors of BC can help you navigate what you need to run your business smoothly. In this section, you will find useful information on a range of resources and services to support you as you establish your business with confidence.
Write a business plan
Writing a business plan is an important step to take to ensure your time and energy are spent wisely from the very beginning. The ScotiaAdvice+ Business Plan Writer is an interactive planning tool that can help guide you through the business plan writing process.
Learn how to incorporate your business
Incorporating a business creates a separate legal entity called a corporation or company, and there are steps you need to take to incorporate a medical practice. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC has information about how to set up a medical corporation, including determining eligibility, fees, and other requirements.
For incorporated doctors:
The Medicus Pension Plan™, a multi-employer pension plan designed exclusively for incorporated physicians by MD Financial and Scotiabank, is now open for registration to incorporated physicians in British Columbia.
Incorporated physicians can register here for an opportunity to enrol in the plan this year or to be first on the registration list for 2024. A limited number of registration spots are available in 2023, with more coming in 2024.
If you are not an incorporated physician and want to learn more about incorporation, you can talk to an MD Advisor by calling the MD Service Centre at 1-800-267-2332.
