Compensation for family physicians
The Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) Payment Model is grounded in a commitment to increasing patient access to community-based, longitudinal family medicine care and expanding primary care capacity across British Columbia. It is a blended payment model that compensates physicians for time, interactions, and their overall patient panel to reflect the comprehensive and continuous nature of family medicine.
Incorporating facility-based care into the payment model in June 2024 allows longitudinal family physicians to bill under the LFP Payment Model for care in the current settings (office and home) and facility-based pregnancy and newborn care in hospital, inpatient, long-term and palliative care.
- Doctors of BC, BC Family Doctors, and the Ministry of Health are also working to simplify and modernize fee-for-service to ensure it remains a viable compensation model.
