Better. Together.

At Doctors of BC, our physician members are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to working diligently on your behalf, and are proud to offer members a range of valuable benefits and services. There is great value in being a member of Doctors of BC, which is why more than 95% of all BC doctors choose to join.

Some of the ways we support our members in their professional and personal lives

Advocacy: Implementation of the Service Centre, comprised of a dedicated support team who respond to member queries, ensuring members get the assistance they need, when they need it.

We have expanded our support for members to enhance health, safety, and well-being in the workplace in both facility and community based settings. This year, a new province wide Community Physician Health and Safety Program, funded through the Physician Master Agreement, is supporting and enhancing workplace health and safety for all community physicians and their support staff.

We continue to support physicians needing assistance negotiating local contracts, which saw an increase of 200% in demand in recent years. And as always, we ensure we accurately represent member interests through engagement surveys, and by meeting with health authority senior leaders to influence topics important to BC physicians.

Robust engagement with government and other stakeholders on issues central to family physicians and specialist physicians. This year we expanded the Longitudinal Family Physician payment model to include facilities based physicians, and we delved into extensive ongoing discussions with government around specialist wait list data and compensation.

As the Ministry of Health moves forward with its digital health strategy, we continue to advocate for physician influence in shaping digital health planning and solutions. This includes  working with government to support system-wide interoperability of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), easing physician burden when accessing provincial systems and other digital health technologies that support connecting the health system and sharing information.

As we move into 2025 we are developing policy to guide our advocacy work on AI and support members in navigating this dynamic and evolving space.

Health and wellness: The Physician Health Program is a responsive, high-quality care provider and community services navigator for physicians, medical learners, and their families. PHP offers a 24/7 confidential helpline at 1-800-663-6729, other free clinical services, peer support groups for physicians, and so much more. If you are having issues with mental health, relationships, substance use, or are going through a life transition, PHP is there to support you.

Insurance: BC physicians can choose from a number of comprehensive personal and professional insurance options, including life, disability, accident and illness; travel and medical; identity theft; health and dental; and property and casualty insurance. Get advice from our salaried insurance advisors who work exclusively with members.

Office resources: Business supports through Business Pathways (new in 2022), and billing and auditing supports such as mini practice profiles, and billing and audit advice.

Financial: We continue to offer a number of negotiated financial benefits including the Contributory Professional Retirement Savings Plan (CPRSP) to help physicians fund their retirement, the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) rebate program to reimburse physicians their CMPA fees, and the Continuing Medical Education (CME) to assist physicians with their educational expenses.

Personal: The Parental Leave Program pays up to 17 weeks when you have a child, either by birth, adoption, or surrogacy; Club MD, in collaboration with Venngo MemberPerks, provides a premium discount program to a vast array of deals offering choice, convenience, and savings for you and your family.

2025 Member Renewal: What you need to know

Doctors of BC members will receive renewal notices and reminders via email.

To recognize the impact of inflation and increased Doctors of BC initiatives (expanded member benefits, resuming in person meetings, etc.) the Board and the Representative Assembly approved an increase in annual member dues. The decision to increase dues wasn’t taken lightly but it is necessary to ensure BC doctors continue to have the support they need in these critical times. With this increase, we no longer have the lowest member fees in the country, but we are now on par with the Alberta Medical Association and the Ontario Medical Association, while offering members more.

As first began last year, Doctors of BC will be applying a 1.8% surcharge for any dues that are paid for by credit card. We always incur costs when processing credit cards, and in 2023 the association incurred $443,000 in credit card costs from dues members paid for by credit card. The 1.8% surcharge offsets this significant expense allowing Doctors of BC to allocate the savings to higher-value services for members, while still offering the convenience of credit card payment to those who prefer it. To avoid this surcharge, direct debit is an option for paying your dues.

During the 2025 membership renewal process, Doctors of BC will automatically carry forward your profile from 2024, which includes Section and Society memberships. For physicians who wish to retain the benefits associated with CMA membership, CMA be collecting dues directly from you.
