BCMA transitions to new name to advocate for better patient care

January 20, 2014

After more than 100 years as the BC Medical Association, the organization that represents physicians around the province is taking on a new name – Doctors of BC.

“The new name will allow us to better connect with doctors, patients and all our partners so that we can make a meaningful difference in our health care system," said Dr William Cunningham, President, Doctors of BC.

The decision was made with a great deal of consideration as part of the creation of a new, 3-year strategic plan. We will focus on stronger engagement between physicians and local communities, Health Authorities and patients with the goal of improving patient care. Our new name will help us achieve that goal.

Dr Cunningham added that interviews with patients showed they had very little understanding of what the BCMA is or does, but saw an important role for doctors in advocating for quality care. Our new name better defines who we are and what we do.

The legal name of our organization will continue to be the British Columbia Medical Association, and will be used in all legal and financial documents.

The strategic plan is posted here.
