As part of the ongoing goal to provide resources and solutions to support physicians in their practices and assist with business costs, Business Pathways has partnered with Watson Goepel LLP to create a Release of Information that pertains to your Assignment of Payment form. An Assignment of Payment agreement is a legal document that physicians sign to designate MSP payments for their services to be made to another practitioner, group clinic, or facility.
A Release of Information agreement will ensure doctors can access their own billings faster from Health Insurance BC (HIBC), and without any roadblocks. Concerns about the limited transparency in an Assignment of Payment agreement became more evident during the implementation of the recent stabilization funds.
Without the Release of Information agreement, HIBC is not able to share information to the physician about their own billings; therefore, this agreement will ensure a physician can access their own MSP billing/remittance statements as the payee upon request.
Although the Release of Information agreement is not a requirement, it is strongly recommended that doctors complete it in conjunction with the Assignment of Payment form to allow both the physician and payee to request access to the same billing records/remittances through HIBC. Completing and submitting this form will not allow HIBC/MSP to redirect any monies owing, including retroactive payments. Any funds that may be owing to the physician must come from the payee.
Since the form is a legal contract, it is strongly recommended that physicians consult their own lawyer before signing to ensure it meets your specific needs. Preferred rates on legal services are available from the Doctors of BC’s Club MD program*member login required.
All completed Assignment of Payment applications and Release of Information agreements can be emailed to provider.program@hibc.gov.bc.ca. Please refer to the Ministry of Health website for the most up-to-date forms and information regarding Assignment of Payments.
