No matter where residents are in their training, they may have questions about their move to set up a practice or sign a service contract. As a society we do a great job of training doctors to be doctors, but could do more to help them learn how to run a medical practice. Doctors of BC and partners UBC and the CMA have introduced the Transition Tuesdays Seminar Series to help our newest doctors start planning effectively and in a confident way.
Transition Tuesdays is series of free, 1-hour seminars held the first Tuesday of every month in the Postgraduate Medical Education Office Conference Room at Vancouver General Hospital from 6 – 7 p.m. (a light dinner is served from 5:30 – 6 p.m.). Residents from around BC have also been participating in the seminars by video-conference, and residents in all levels are welcome to attend.
The talks focus on the practical skills residents need to be successful in their future medical practice: from leadership, tax and insurance planning, negotiating, incorporation, and billing and fees, this roster of speakers helps them start their careers on solid ground. So far this year topics have included “Financial planning for residents” by Greg Lee Son from MD Financial Management and “The critical role of values in leadership development” by Daniel Skarlicki from the UBC Sauder School of Business.
Upcoming topics include “Negotiations challenges: Supports available to you,” “Insurance planning,” “Tax planning,” “Investing 101,” “Introduction to incorporation,” “Empowering physicians to become leaders,” and “Fees, audits, and billing.” See the table below for details.
While the talks are free, residents need to register. For more information about registering, please contact Tessa.Feuchuk@ubc.ca.
Transition Tuesdays is just one element of a series of engagements with medical students and residents—our doctors of tomorrow—that Doctors of BC is undertaking. Other ways we’re helping our newest members is by providing opportunities for medical students to interact with physicians from different disciplines prior to their residency selection, direct financial support for their education and clubs, a CaRMS Mock Interview program, and graduation celebration dinners for residents, among others.
