UBC med student makes history at BCMA

June 7, 2013

Twenty-two year-old Michelle Chiu, a first year medical student at UBC, has been elected to the BCMA Audit and Finance Committee after a vote by members at the Annual General Meeting on June 1. It is the first time a student has been elected to a committee position in an open vote.

Audit and Finance is responsible for studying the present and future financial needs of the Association and ways and means of providing for them.  When requested by the Board or the members in the Business Session, it provides advice regarding the financial affairs of the Association including the investment of funds.

Michelle comes to her new post with plenty of experience – she received her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Sauder School of Business. Before entering medical school, she worked in the world of investment banking.

Why the interest taking on this opportunity? “When I started medical school, I was looking for an opportunity to contribute to the BCMA because it has an important mandate, and I thought that adding a student voice to this committee would be great.  This also fits with my education and work background.”

BCMA President, Dr. William Cunningham, is thrilled to have Michelle on board. “Medical students have a lot to offer - often bring fresh ideas and a new perspective.  We hope to see more medical students get involved with the BCMA. They are our future doctors, and their voice is important as we help to build a stronger health care system for patients.”
