Get Moving!

January 6, 2012

Did you know the average Canadian physician only gets 15 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise each day?

Like the rest of the population, Canadian doctors need to get moving! The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week for adults, with up to 300 minutes for maximum health benefits. On top of the personal benefits of regular exercise, physicians who are physically active are more likely to provide effective counseling about exercise to their patients. Many physicians find that sharing their own personal successes with regular exercise is very effective in promoting positive changes in the exercise habits of their patients.

BC’S recent Walk With Your Doc program is an example of how active physicians can encourage patients to get moving.  From May 9th-14th, over 100 doctors and 2,000 patients took part in a series of organized walks throughout the province.
