Celebrating first-year medical residents as they arrive in Vancouver to begin the next step in their careers

July 6, 2015

More than 300 first year medical residents assembled in Vancouver June 25 to take part in Resident Doctors of BC’s annual orientation for new residents. The day-long orientation covered all aspects of residency life in BC and included presentations from the University of British Columbia, the Canadian Medical Association, and the Rural Coordinating Committee, among others. Dr Charles Webb, president of Doctors of BC, talked to residents about leadership opportunities, including participating in discussion groups about improving primary care. “As millennials you are a passionate, brilliant and energetic generation,” Dr Webb said in his speech. “The challenges we are faced with today can be revolutionized based on your input.”

At the end of the orientation, Doctors of BC hosted a reception for residents to celebrate the first day of the next stage in their medical career. Held at the Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar at Waterfront Station in Gastown, the atmosphere was electric and loud – with plenty of opportunity for residents to mingle with their new colleagues. Both Dr Katie Beadon, president of Resident Doctors of BC, and Dr Webb welcomed the crowd and talked about their own experiences as residents. They agreed that finding a mentor can help residents stay grounded during the next 3-5 years of what could be the toughest stage of their lives. “While you are now residents in BC, many of you will eventually become doctors of BC which is why we are here tonight,” said Dr Beadon. “Resident Doctors of BC and Doctors of BC are a team and work together as you progress throughout your career.” At the end of the evening door prizes were announced, with four movie passes and a fit bit handed out to five lucky winners. Photos of the evening can be viewed here.
