#GetLoud to raise awareness and build support for Mental Health Week: May 2nd – May 8th

May 3, 2016

Good mental health is necessary for us to live healthy, productive lives. Yet at any given point in time, 20% of Canadians will experience some sort of mental health issue. And evidence indicates that among the elderly, the incidence of mental illness is growing. For this year’s Mental Health Week (May 2 – 8), the Canadian Mental Health Association is focusing its attention on the 25% of seniors who experience depression, anxiety, dementia, and some forms of psychosis – but are consistently being undertreated. Too often, a mental health diagnosis is delayed due to the patient’s multiple health conditions and multiple medications. And sometimes seniors hesitate to seek the help and support they need out of fear of discrimination or shame.

The rest of us can do a lot to bring greater awareness and understanding of this silent illness. We can talk about it and encourage honest conversation, we can pay attention to changes in the mood and behaviour of friends and relatives, and we can offer our unconditional support.

Seniors who think they may have a mental health issue can talk with their doctor. Doctors are a great resource who care about their patients’ overall health and have connections to other health professionals. This week, let’s all #Get Loud to maintain positive health.
