BCMA President Addresses First-Year Med Students

September 12, 2013

On behalf of BC’s doctors, President Dr William Cunningham congratulated first-year medical students at a special BCMA orientation event held at UBC on September 11.

Dr Cunningham looked back at his own time at medical school, telling the students that, “Along the way it was hard work, with long hours, and some stressful situations, but I loved every minute of it. And you will too.  And whatever you decide, whatever choices you make, the BC Medical Association will be there along the way to support you.”

Dr Cunningham advised students to become involved in interests outside of school work. “For me, it was a passion for medical politics… I felt like I was making a real contribution outside the world of studies. It really helped keep me connected and healthy,” he said. Dr Cunningham explained that the BCMA is a community of physicians who work together to make a positive, meaningful difference. He encouraged students to get involved in the Association so that their voice is heard.

Each student received the coveted backpack and enjoyed a pizza lunch.  After the session, a Class of 2017 photo was taken – an inaugural tradition that will continue. The event was co-sponsored by the BC Medical Association and the Canadian Medical Association.
